Snow falling on North Grove Street in Lincolnton around 8pm Sunday.

WINTER'S HERE!

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLN COUNTY -- Mother Nature proclaimed Sunday winter wasn’t over yet, as rain and sleet pounded Lincoln County during the day, followed by a wet snow that started around 6pm.

Within two hours of the snow beginning to fall, the Lincoln County Communications Center was flooded with accident calls.

Forecasters predicted weather would start getting worse with the formation of black ice as temperatures drooped throughout the night.

According to Lincolnton public works and utilities director Steve Peeler, city workers were preparing Sunday for the onslaught of winter weather that’s predicted to drop several inches of snow across Lincoln County.

“We’re spending the day getting the plows and sand ready,” said Peeler. “If the snow doesn’t come, then we’ll spend the day Monday dismantling the plows.”

Peeler said as roads become slick from the sleet and rain, public works will start treating the roads.

Just before 7pm Sunday, firefighters from Northbrook and Lincolnton were called to separate accidents within several minutes of each other.

First, callers into the Lincoln County Communications Center told dispatchers there was an accident on Highway 321 near the Lincolnton exit 24.

Radio traffic indicated at least two cars were involved with one of the vehicles running into the guardrail. The accident was at the bridge before the exit. No serious injuries were reported.

The second accident involved two cars at the intersection of Highway 274 and Flay Road in western Lincoln County around 6:53pm. No injuries were reported as in the first accident.

Wrecks were also reported on Highway 150, at the Lincoln House Restaurant on South Generals Boulevard and reports of a power line down at Startown and Clarks Creek Road at the convenience store on the corner.

Meantime, the message from authorities is clear. If people don’t have to go out, stay home.

Snow started falling after 6pm Sunday across Lincoln County.
