Lincoln County 4-H'ers are Winners at State 4-H Congress

RALEIGH -- Lincoln County 4-H'ers received honors at state competitions during the annual North Carolina 4-H Congress. The Congress was held July 21-25 at North Carolina State University.

State Winners were:

Cody Johnsen, 13, son of Jeff and Kristi Johnsen of Denver, won the silver medal for the 11-13 age division Soil Water and the Environment Presentation.

Wyatt Johnsen, 11, son of Jeff and Kristi Johnsen of Denver, won the silver medal for the 11-13 age division Electric Presentation.

Trey Johnsen, 9, son of Jeff and Kristi Johnsen of Denver, won the silver medal for the 9-10 age division Electric Presentation.

Chelsea Mills, 13, daughter of James and Barbara Mills of Belmont won the bronze medal for the 11-13 age division Hospitality, Ettiquette and Social Graces Presentation.

Guy Perkins, 14, son of Gordon and Cheree Perkins of Iron Station, won the gold medal for the 14-18 age division Egg Cookery Presentation. He will be attending the National Egg and Poultry Conference to compete with his presentation this fall. Guy was also recognized as the 13-15 age division Poultry Cumulative Record winner at the annual 4-H Donor and Awards Luncheon. He also participated in the Application, Resume Interview Program competition for national 4-H trips and won a trip to National 4-H Congress this fall.

Ruth Perkins, 9, daughter of Gordon and Cheree Perkins of Iron Station, won the bronze medal for the 9-10 age division Bugs and Bees Presentation.

A Servant’s Heart 4-H Club, led by Angela Goodson, received the Southwest District Bronze Community Service Award.

Lincoln County 4-H’ers also participated in the State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest. The Junior Team placed second in the state. Members were Chelsea Mills, Joseph Perkins, Ruth Perkins, and Thomas Pressley. The Senior Team also placed second and members were Greg Thomas, Christopher Schultz, Emily Sherrill and Guy Perkins. Christopher Schultz placed 9th as overall individual.

The Lincoln County Sound Check 4-H Club received a blue award for the Southwest District 4-H Entertains. Members of the band include: Dylan Dunkle, Grayson Dunkle, Caitlin Bumgarner, Kristin Atwell, Sara Carleton and Guy Perkins. Guy also received a blue award for his performance in the Southwest District Entertains.

Approximately 850 4-H'ers, volunteer leaders and North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agents attended 4-H Congress.The 4-H program is conducted by North Carolina Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State Universities. More than 200,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 27,000 adult and youth volunteers.
