Who Are You Trusting?
by Cindy Jones

Recently I read the following scripture -"Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely upon his God.” Isaiah 50:10. I got to thinking about the questions it asked and thought perhaps we need to take a closer look. Let’s break it down question by question.

Who among you fears the LORD? - Do we really fear the Lord? I don’t mean fear as in afraid, I mean do we really respect and revere God and his ways? This first question is being addressed to believers, those who already belong to God. Yet they are being questioned about their commitment to the Lord.

Who obeys the voice of His Servant? - “If you love Me, keep My commandments” John 14:15 Perhaps as we go through this busy season we call Christmas we need to check our commitment level to the Lord. We need to make sure He is our focus and not all the gifts.

Let’s try to keep the fear of the Lord our focus as we prepare to enter 2009. Then we will be able to claim the promise found in Malachi 3:16 - “Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who meditate on His name.”

Who walks in darkness and has no light? - The rain falls on the just and the unjust. Right now many people are facing uncertainty about their jobs, the future, etc. Maybe that’s where you are right now. Perhaps you’ve been fearful or even depressed about the economy, the state of our country, your job situation. Your answer can be found in the next phrase of this scripture. “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12. And look at John 12:46 "I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.”

Let him trust in the name of the LORD. – “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” Psalm 62:8 - Do you see what that says? We’re to trust in him at ALL times. Now, I am preaching to myself here. On Dec. 10 I have an out patient procedure that has to be done and I am not exactly thrilled about it. But I have been reminded that I just need to trust the Lord with this as much as I do anything else. I am trying to keep Isaiah 26:3 in the front of my mind. It says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Yes, things in this country are a bit shaky right now, but those who trust in the Lord will be taken care of.

“… and rely upon his God.” – I separated this phrase from the sentence it was a part of on purpose. I want you to see the difference between trusting God and relying on him. The word rely in the Hebrew means “to lean on or to support.” When you lean upon something it does what, it supports you. That’s what we need to do in our lives. We need to lean on the Lord and allow him to support when we feel too weak to stand. Look at Proverbs 3:5,6 in the Amplified version… “
5Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. 6In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.” Sometimes we get caught up in what “we” think and that thinking takes us away from the wisdom of God. Let’s rely on him and allow him to be our support.

Finally, as we get ready to close, allow me to share just a couple more scriptures with you. You see, the Word of God is your strength. I could say all kinds of encouraging things to you all day but my words would do nothing compared to what the Bible can do for you.

“Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; 'For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; he also has become my salvation.'" Isaiah 12:2 The word salvation here in the Hebrew means “deliverance, welfare, prosperity, wholeness, victory.” Wow! What a promise!

This last scripture pulls it all together. “
9The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. 10And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:9-10 Feeling oppressed? Jesus is your refuge, a place of safety and security. Even in times of trouble he will be there! And look at that last sentence… If we will seek the Lord he will NOT forsake us. Hallelujah! No matter what we’re going through. No matter what the economy looks like. No matter what our stocks are doing or not doing… No matter what… If we will seek the Lord he will take care of us!
