CHIEF BECOMES CHIEF OF FORCE IN GEORGIA
City Manager John McDonough Announces New Leader

GASTONA Terry L. Sult, currently
the chief of police in Gastonia, will become the
new police chief for the City of Sandy Springs,
GA. on October 27. He will receive the city
benefits including a salary of $143,500. His
current salary is $103,168.
I am confident that Terry Sult will lead us
effectively and collaboratively. He is an
innovative chief with unquestionable integrity.
His leadership will be a great asset for Sandy
Springs, said City Manager John McDonough.
I chose Chief Sult not only for his
successes but also based on impeccable
references,
Sult has a long history of collaboration and
building multijurisdictional relationships. As a
career law enforcement officer, He has worked
closely with both business and in diverse
communities. Sult has served in policing for more
than 30 years, during which time he served in all
job functions from dispatcher to Police Commander
in Charlotte/Mecklenburg Police Department and as
the Police Chief in Gastonia.,
Sult believes that the Sandy Springs approach to
local government is consistent with the
philosophy of management preferable in effective
policing.
The focus of the police department must be
preventing crime, solving-problems and enforcing
laws, he said. Sandy Springs appears
to embrace this philosophy on a citywide
basis.
A candidate pool of 62 first went through a
rigorous paper review resulting in Sult as the
top candidate. He holds an MBA from Pfeiffer
University and an undergraduate degree in
criminal justice. He has held a multitude of
police responsibilities and has extensive
training in all aspects of law enforcement.
Chief Sult will upgrade the Sandy Springs
Police Department into a strong, cohesive force,
and he brings a host of new and progressive
initiatives to engage the total community toward
a reduction of crime in our city. He is an
excellent choice for a City such as ours that
embraces new approaches and ideas, said
Mayor Eva Galambos.
The Sandy Springs Police cover 37 square miles of
residential and commercial area just north of the
City of Atlanta. The Sandy Springs Police kicked
off police operations on July 1, 2006, taking
over for the Fulton County Police who covered the
Sandy Springs area since July 1, 1975.
The department has 119 sworn officers. This
represents the commitment to provide the citizens
with police coverage comparable to the national
average of 1.8 to 2.0 officers per 1000 citizens.
The goal for the department is to operate with
between 120 to 140 sworn officers.
An interim chief for the Gastonia Police should
be name within a few weeks according to City
Manager Jim Palenick.
