American Legion Playoffs Are Underway

It’s do or die for Area IV American Legion baseball teams as the Area IV tournament got underway this week. Pineville took the top seed from the Eastern Division posting a 13-5 division record. They were followed by Union County at 12-6. Cherryville Post 100 and Shelby Post 82 tied for the top honors in the Western Division, each posting 13-3 division records. Shelby rides a 15 game winning streak entering the playoffs. Shelby then won a drawing with Cherryville for the top seed of Area IV. It’s Shelby’s first top seed since 1976.

Congratulations to the Crest Junior American Legion baseball team. Crest completed their inaugural season by posting a 13-3 record. The team will not participate in this year’s playoffs because of a decision that was made before the season. Rutherfordton which finished second in the division to Crest will host an eight team double elimination tournament that gets underway this weekend.

Forestview’s Shannon Smith has commited to play basketball at North Carolina. Smith was named the 2009 Gaston Gazette girls basketball player of the year and will play for Gastonia’s Sylvia Hatchell at Chapel Hill. The Lady Tarheels went 28-7 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Smith averaged 23.6 points per game and 6.6 assists per game last season for the Lady Jaguars which lost to Greensboro Dudley 60-58 in the girls state championship game. Smith set a school record with 841 points this past season. Her 1657 career points ranks 11th in the Gaston County record book and is third in school history.

Hats off to the Boger City Optimist 11 and 12 year old girls softball team. The girls went undefeated in the Dixie Youth district tournament and will now represent Lincoln County in the state tournament which will be held in Wilmington from July 10th – 15th.

For 29 years Butch Richardson has coached the Lincolnton High School girls volleyball team. Last week coach Richardson called it quits after coaching nearly 600 varsity and 200 junior varsity matches. Richardson has three conference championships and was named coach of the year three seasons. Richardson will be replaced by junior varsity head coach Holly Procita. Jennifer Queen will take over as the new junior varsity coach.

Hats off to East Lincoln’s Kasi Benskin and Rebekka Glass. The two were part of the west team that won the Gold Medal Game in the North Carolina girls soccer state showcase. East Lincoln coach Jason Dragoon served as the team’s head coach. The West team won by a 1-0 score over the East team and a 2-0 score over the South team on Sunday.

Congratulations to the West Lincoln 7 year old All Star Optimist Coach Pitch Team. The team won their District Championship.

Former Crest High School graduate Travis Padgett finished fourth overall in the men’s 100 meter United State Championships last week in Eugene, Oregon. Micheal Rodgers won the event and is the 2008 Indoor National Champion at 60 meters.

Shelby’s Norris Hopper was traded from the Cincinnatti Reds to the Chicago White Sox organization last week. Hopper will play for the Triple A Charlotte Knights. Hopper had been with the Reds’ Louisville Bats hitting .282 with 20 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. Hopper was traded for catcher Corky Miller. In 2006 Hopper led the International League in hitting with a.347 average.
