SHERIFFS
DETECTIVES LOOKING FOR ROOFTOP BANDITS
By
Jon Mayhew
Sheriffs
detectives are investigating an attempted
break-in and break-in of two East Lincoln
restaurants on Highway 16, which are
located across the street from one
another. Investigators say
instead
of smashing a door or window, the suspect
or suspects
went straight to the top,
getting on the roofs of the businesses.
The first incident was reported just
before midnight Wednesday
at the Captains Cap Restaurant,
1218 North Highway 16.
Deputy R. D. Richard checked the roof of
the building after
finding insulation hanging from the
ceiling and discovered three
roof fans had been damaged and removed in
an attempt to gain
entry.
The suspects got onto the roof using a
ladder that was left at the
building by the owner. Nothing was
reported missing and
damage was estimated at $1,000.
Suspects were able to gain entry into the
Westlake Restaurant
at 1235 North Highway 16.
A co-owner of the restaurant came into
the business around 5:25
a.m. Thursday and discovered someone had
entered the
business through the roof.
The suspect or suspects climbed onto the
roof using a
homemade ladder and entry was made
through an access area
on the roof, then moved through a crawl
space between the roof
and ceiling and broke through the ceiling
in the dining area of
the business.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken
from the office and
exit was made back through the roof.
Damage to the building
was estimated at $3,500.
Anyone with information about the
incidents is asked the call the
Lincoln County Sheriffs Office at
704-736-8856 or Crimestoppers
at 704-736-8909. Anonymous tips that lead
to arrests in any
crime may pay a cash reward of up to
$1,000.
