NEWTON - Devoted
husband, father, papaw, and friend, Mr.
Patterson Pat Alvin Wimberly,
age 62, of Newton passed away Tuesday,
June 16, 2009 at Catawba Valley Medical
Center in Hickory. Born August 16, 1946
in Lincoln County, he was the son of the
late Charlie and Arlee Abernethy
Wimberly. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by a brother,
Johnny Wimberly. Mr. Wimberly was a
member of Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church in
Maiden. He worked for Newton Furniture
for 25 years. Mr. Wimberly loved children
and dedicated his life serving the
community as a devoted member of the
Balls Creek Optimist Club. He served as
District President of Eastern Catawba
County Little League for over 30 years.
He served several terms as President and
Lt. Governor of District 7 Optimist
International. He was also a member of
the Bandys High School Athletic Boosters
for over 20 years, and was presented by
the Bandys High School Baseball Team, the
award For the love of the game and
dedication to the Athletes in the Little
League Program and Community of Balls
Creek for over 30 years. Mr.
Wimberly also served on various
committees in Catawba County for Little
League Programs and also served on the
Board of Directors for the Bill Hendrick
Scholarship Committee. He attended the
International Little World Series in
2006.
He is survived by:
Wife of 41 years: Marcia Wimberly of the
home
Son: Todd Wimberly and wife Tonya of
Hickory
Daughter: Hope Wimberly Shaw of the home
and special friend Tracy Westmoreland
Brother: Rocky Wimberly and wife Mary
Francis of Newton
2 Grandsons: Jarrett Shaw, Benjamin
Wimberly
Granddaughter: Abigail Wimberly
Special grandchildren: Lauren
Westmoreland, Lindsey Westmoreland
A number of nieces and nephews
The funeral service will be held on
Friday, June 19, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at Mt.
Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden with Rev.
Pat Purdy and Rev. Charles Keever
officiating. The body will lie in state
30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church
cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be
members of the Balls Creek Optimist,
Little League officials, and coaches.
The family will receive friends on
Thursday from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at Mt.
Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden.
Memorials may be made to Balls Creek
Optimist Club, 2551 Buffalo Shoals Road,
Catawba, NC 28609.
Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the
Wimberly family.
