What could be lurking inside
your home that kills more people annually
than drunk driving? Radon. Tasteless and
odorless, radon is a radioactive gas that
is naturally produced as uranium in the
soil breaks down. In North Carolina, 7%
of homes have elevated radon levels. The
highest levels are typically found in the
mountains and lower levels at the coast.

Dear Mr.
Mayhew:
You recently made the statement in a
Carolina Scoop editorial that maybe a law
should be passed making parents
responsible for their teenager's acts.
Hello! Parents are already legally liable
in varying degrees for their children
under the age of eighteen. Modern law
enforcement just looks the other way in
many cases.
A national firearms law was passed not
too long ago making parents responsible
for failing to properly secure their
firearms when said firearms are used by
their children in committing a crime.
If district attorneys, police, sheriffs,
and judges are not going to enforce
existing laws, what good would it do to
enact another?

Even
though it was 10 degrees when I came to
work this morning, the gardener in me is
already looking forward to the end of
winter. There are some sure signs that
the gardening season is drawing near. The
first is that the days are getting
progressively longer.
On 05-13-08 R and M Textiles on Long
Shoals Road reported that an unknown
person had removed several business
checks from his business check book. The
checks began turning up in Gastonia, and
were made payable to Amber Reneau
Clemmer.
One
of the safest ways to prevent becoming a
victim of fraud is to have your Social
Security and other retirement income
checks direct deposited. If that is not
an option for you then make sure you know
when the checks will arrive and retrieve
them from your mailbox immediately. Also
do not have your social security numbers
printed on your personal checks.

AUTHORITIES
LOOKING FOR DRIVER
By
Jon Mayhew
NORTH
LINCOLN -- Authorities had a
mystery on their hands in the wee hours
of Tuesday morning involving an
overturned vehicle with no driver.
The
opinions expressed in "For What It's
Worth" doesn't reflect those of the
management and staff of The Carolina
Scoop....although it probably should!
That was the question
recently posed to me by my wife,
Elizabeth. We were looking through
reports at the Lincolnton Police
Department one day, when we noticed the
overwhelming number of teenage suspects
involved in crimes ranging from larceny
to attempted murder.
