DENVER
-- As many as four Lincoln County schools
had either little or no
water throughout the day Wednesday, as
two water main breaks kept
county employees busy.
As a result of the water main break on
Furnace Road and Highway 73,
East Lincoln Middle School will be closed
Thursday, as they still do not
have any water.
According to Lincoln County Emergency
Management director Susan
Spake, firefighters from Pumpkin Center
will be on standby at the school
Thursday, as they were Wednesday, for
increased fire protection.
Spake's office only learned of the water
main breaks after officials with
Lincoln County Schools contacted
Emergency Management almost four
hours after the second water-main break.
According to county water department head
Steve Gilbert, the Furnace
Road/Highway 73 break happened around 8am
Wednesday. Emergency
Management was called around 11:50am.
Meantime, Gilbert said a second water
"leak" was discovered Tuesday
afternoon at Amity Church and Old Mill
Roads. There weren't any efforts
made Tuesday to fix the leak according to
Gilbert.
"It became worse overnight Tuesday,
so then we went to fix that leak,"
said
Gilbert, adding he couldn't directly
pinpoint cold weather as the cause of
either water-main break.
Other schools affected by the Wednesday
main breaks included Iron
Station Elementary; Norris Childers
Elementary; and Love Memorial
School.
The other three schools had full water
pressure around noon according to
Spake. School officials could not be
reached for comment on how many
students were affected at the height of
the water main breaks.
