AUTHORITIES: NO LINCOLN FATALS SO FAR

DENVERAuthorities were called to the new Highway 16 near the overpass around 4:45 a.m. Monday to reports of a van hitting a bicycle.

It’s the latest in a string of accidents in Lincoln County where speed and driver inattentiveness may be involved. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, there haven’t been any fatal accidents in Lincoln over the Labor Day holiday so far this year.

The same can’t be said for Catawba or Iredell Counties. In Catawba County, a 20-year-old woman was killed Saturday morning after she was thrown from a motorcycle where she was a passenger. She died at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory from what authorities said was internal injuries after hitting a fence post. See The Carolina Scoop Tuesday morning for more on this story.

Also, there was a fatality reported Sunday morning in Iredell County. Details on that accident are forthcoming.

Highway Patrol troopers are cracking down on unsafe drivers, as well as intoxicated and unrestrained drivers during this weekend. Last year, there were more than 10 fatalities on North Carolina roads during the Labor Day holiday.

While there are increased patrols on the roadways in Lincoln and surrounding counties, lake patrols have increased over this Labor Day weekend. As of early Monday morning, there haven’t been any drowning incidents reported on Lincoln’s Lake Norman area.
