Nicole Kidman
1967 -
Born June 20, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii
Actress
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman
told a courtroom Monday (Nov. 19, 2007) how she was reduced to
tears and feared a car accident when a celebrity photographer
chased her.
Kidman spoke of hunkering down in the back seat of her car as she
was driven to her parents' home in Sydney on January 23, 2005.
She told the New South Wales Supreme Court that she was
"really, really scared" during the ride and was
"in tears and distressed" by the time she reached her
destination.
Kidman testified during a hearing on the photographers
defamation suit against a Sydney newspaper.
A jury has already found that a Sun-Herald newspaper article
defamed Jamie Fawcett by calling him Sydney's most disliked
freelance photographer and was determined to "wreak
havoc" on Kidman's private life. The current hearing is to
decide whether the newspaper's publisher, Fairfax Media, should
pay the photographer damages, and how much.
Kidman described two other times that Fawcett had allegedly been
intrusive when trying to photograph her: during her honeymoon and
again after Christmas 2006. She said he was one of the reasons
she employed full-time security guards.
Nicole Mary Kidman was born June 20, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
At age four she moved with her parents to Sydney, Australia. As a
schoolgirl she attended a local theatre group and, encouraged by
director Jane Campion, made a notable film debut in Bush
Christmas (1983).
Her U.S. breakthrough came with Dead Calm (1989), and success
followed with Billy Bathgate (1991), To Die For (1995), Practical
Magic (1998), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), in which she co-starred
with husband Tom Cruise (divorced, 2001).
Later films include Moulin Rouge (2000, Golden Globe), The Hours
(2002, Golden Globe; BAFTA; Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia
Woolf), Cold Mountain (2003), and The Interpreter (2005). She
married country singer Keith Urban (1967 ) in 2006.
Kidman was forced to break her schedule filming Baz Luhrmann's
new drama Australia to attend court.
