IRON
STATION -- Large crowds gathered
Thursday for the ground breaking
of the Lincoln County Airport's new
terminal.
Interim airport manager David Lowe said
the groundbreaking is the
culmination of several years of planning.
"We realized the original terminal
building was too small and not adequate
to continue improving the service level
or to accomodate existing tenats,"
said Lowe. "The airport authority
began debate on what service needs
should be available in a terminal
building."
The new terminal building is fully funded
by the state; Lincoln County and
the City of Lincolnton; Duke Power; and
private donations.
The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Regional
Airport began operation in 1986
with a small mixture of private and
corporate aircraft. Since that time the
airport has grown to become an important
reliever airport for the Charlotte
Douglas International Airport serving the
corporate customer and the
private pilot in every way possible.
The $1.2 million airport terminal is
4,700 square feet and two stories. The
building will be nearly double the size
of the current facility.
Airport officials said about 1,000 square
feet was cut from the original
design due to a fundraising shortfall
caused by a worsening economy.
Also postponed is the construction of
additional hanger space and plans for
a 500-foot runway extension.
