LINCOLNTON -- Porch lights across Lincolnton will be lit Tuesday night for the annual commemeration of National Night Out.

Lincolnton Police have lined up 12 block parties to visit this year as opposed to the 10 parties lined up last year.

The block parties are on Julia Drive; Oaklawn; Mockingbird Lane; Pine Street; Cardinal Care; Leewood Acres; Newcastle Avenue; Deaton Avenue; Bonview Avenue; Crestview; Carter Street; and 321 North Oak. Newcastle's celebration starts at 6:45 p.m.

"It's a way for the community and police to get together to promote crime prevention and safety," said Lincolnton Police Lt. Kent Lukach, who is the Lincolnton Police Department's crime education and prevention officer.

According to the Web site, www.nationaltownwatch.org, more than 10,000 communities in all 50 states participated in the National Night Out 2007. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to crminals, letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
