By Jon Mayhjew

Joe Kirk Bost Jr. is charged with not performing contract work he was paid for.

DENVER -- A Cornelius contractor faces charges in eastern Lincoln
County after county detectives say he was paid for work he never
performed.

Detective Andrew Alvarado charged Joe Kirk Bost Jr., 48, Heritgae Green
Drive, Cornelius. Bost is the owner of Nautical Marine Construction Inc.

The Mayo family of Denver received a quote from Bost in the amount of
$52,098 to build a new double level floating dock at their Lake Norman
Home. The victims made the first payment on the dock in July 2007 of
$16,000.

The victims made a second payment on the dock in February of 2008 in
the amount of $19,829. They also received another quote for a new deck
with a spiral staircase at a total cost of $14,703 for work to start on April 3,
2008 and completed within 14 days.

The victims paid another $12,500 to bring the total paid to $48,329.

Detective Alvarado said the contractor only completed a small portion of
the deck.

The victim’s attorney send Mr. Bost a certified letter on November 4, 2008
advising him of the breach of contract and that he could be charged.

The suspect made no attempt to contact the victims and he was charged
with one felony count each of obtaining property by false pretenses and
obtaining advances under promise to work.

Bost was arrested on January 25 by Cornelius Police and turned over to
Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives. He was taken before a magistrate
and released under a $10,000 secured bond.

Investigation is continuing and other charges could be filed.
