Lincoln Charter School principal Judy Smith was "arrested" Thursday, one of 50 people in Lincoln County sought to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

PEOPLE "ARRESTED" FOR GOOD CAUSE THURSDAY
Muscular Dystrophy Association Exceeds Goal for 2008

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLNTON -- In front of her children Thursday, Judy Smith was arrested by Lincoln County Shereiff's deputy Don Sain.

It wasn't for a crime that Smith, principal of the Lincolnton campus, was arrested for, however; it was to help in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy.

Thursday, the Boger City Fire Department turned into a "jail," an attempt to "lock up" a dreaded neuromuscular disease that affects millions of lives.

Authorities spent the day "rounding up suspects," who were then "jailed" under "bond" and had to call family, friends and co-workers to raise "bail."

As she was being processed into "jail," Smith said that her Lincolnton students raised more than $1,450 dollars in a penny war towards her "bail."

Smith was one of at least 50 people across Lincoln County who faced a similar fate, all for a good cause. Other names of note that were "arrested" included Lincoln County Sheriff Tim Daugherty and Lincolnton Police Chief Dean Abernathy.

Once "suspects" were brought in to be "sentenced" by "Judge" John Causey, people are placed into "jail." While there, they make phone calls to family, friends and business associated to post "bail."

Mihal said the goal for this year's lockup was set at $22,000.

By 1:30 p.m., Mihal said they were more than $4,000 above their goal.

Mihal said the event is usually held at the Comfort Inn. This year, however, a firefighter suggested Mihal's organization use the Boger City Fire Department on McCallister Road.

Smith was well guarded so she wouldn't "escape." From left to right, Lincolnton police Lt. Tony Hallman and Lt. Kent Lukach, Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy Don Sain, detective Chuck McGinley, Lt. Brian Green and detective Dennis Harris all keep a watchful eye on Smith.

Mihal thought it was a good idea and a way to say "thanks" for everything firefighters do for MDA, including the annual "Fill the Boot" campaign.

"Firefighters do so much for us throughout the year," said Mihal of Lincoln firefighters.

As Smith worked to raise more money for her "bail," there was one burning question in her mind.

Who put her name in for the lockup?

"It could be any number of people," said Smith. "The teachers wouldn't tell me who did it, but it's a lot of fun."
