DENVER -- An Eastern
Lincoln County man is charged with
creating counterfeit checks and
possessing stolen property after
authorities seized what amounted to a
counterfeit-check operation in Denver.
Authorities in Lincoln County got a break
in the case when they were contacted by
Newton Police regarding Delta Dawn
Bensley, 35, of Old Shelby Road. Bensley
reportedly passed one of the counterfeit
checks made by Christopher Michael
Martin, 24, of Highway 16 North.
Detective Andrew Alvarado was alerted to
Martin by Detective Sgt. T.W. Haynes of
the Newton PD after Bensley passed one of
the checks at a bail bond and check
cashing business in Newton.
Bensley, who identified Martin, was
charged with forgery, uttering and
obtaining property by false pretenses.
She also faces charges in Lincoln County.
Investigators say the checks were printed
by computer and typewriter and were
written on an actual business, Preferred
Carolinas Realty out of Winston-Salem.
Detective Alvarado and Sgt. Hayes secured
a search warrant and went to Martin's
residence. They seized a computer, two
printers, typewriter, a notebook
containing account information, several
counterfeit checks, a safe, marijauna and
drug paraphernalia. Also seized was a
$30,000 boat that was reported out of
Charleston, S.C., around Oct. 10;. Two
other people are charged with misdemeanor
possession of drugs and drug
paraphernalia.
Chris Martin was charged with 17 counts
of forgery of an instrument, and felony
possession of stolen goods. He is also
facing charges in Catawba and Mecklenburg
Counties. He was released on a $10,000
unsecured bond. Investigation into the
case is continuing and more charges are
expected to be filed.
