LINCOLNTON
-- A man working at the
demolition site of Belding-Hausman in
Lincolnton falls 20 feet down an elevator
shaft around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. Now
police are warning people to stay away
from the facility because it could be
dangerous.
Lincolnton
Police Sgt. Willie Vaughn was the first
police officer on the scene at the
facility on East Main Street. Vaughn said
he heard the dispatch for fire and medic
and went to the scene.
"The
man suffered a compound fracture on his
wrist with bones sticking out," said
Vaughn. "He also had a cut over his
eye."
The
Carolina Scoop shot exclusive video at
the scene moments after rescue workers,
medic, firefighters and police were on
the scene assessing the patient.
Authorities
initially thought there was more than one
patient involved in the incident.
"The
man told me he thought he saw someone
else in the building," said Vaughn,
adding the man went to check on the other
person when the incident happened.
"Several people at the scene
searched the building and couldn't find
anyone."
Firefighters
said authorities were tryting to locate
flight service to airlift the victim,
possibly to Charlotte. However, there
wasn't any choppers available.
Vaughn
said the man was already at the rear of
the building when he pulled up.
He
cautioned workers and the public alike on
the risk taken when working at a major
demolition site like Belding-Hausman
"It's
a dangerous area at this time and people
should stay away until the demolition is
complete," said Vaughn.
An
Ingle's grocery store -- and possibly a
Burger King restaurant -- are planned for
part of the old Belding-Hausman site.
