PROFILE AMERICA

July 25, 2008
Just as
rodeos show off the skills used daily by cowboys, lumberjacks
also have competitions showcasing their logging skills. Two of
them get under way today.
The Lumberjack World Championships run through the weekend in
Hayward, Wisconsin. Spectators will watch log rolling, tree
climbing, saw cutting and ax chopping. In Rangeley, Maine, the
Logging Museum Festival Days will have many of the same
competitions, plus the Miss Woodchip Contest, a parade and the
Loggers Hall of Fame.
Each year, the U.S. produces more than 15.5 billion cubic feet of
lumber, plywood, veneer and pulp products. Making these wood and
paper products provides jobs for close to a million people.
