LINCOLNTON -- Four
Toastmaster clubs from three counties, including
Lincoln, recently met to compete for top honors
and to see who would represent area Toastmasters'
clubs in a district competition.
Two members of the Lincolnton
Toastmasters are going to district.
Carolyn Agosta won first
place in the Evaluation contest, while Brewster
Strope won second place in the humorous speech
contest.
Both will compete in the
district competition, scheduled for
Hendersonville next month.
Lincolnton Toastmasters meet
every Monday at 7 p.m. in room 319 at the Lincoln
Seniors Center on the Lincoln campus of Gaston
College.
Toastmaster Jim Rhine served
as contest master. Strope's speech was entitled
"The $1,500 Speech."
"At Toastmasters,
members learn by speaking to groups and working
with others in a supportive environment. Our
Toastmaster Club is made up of 10-20 people who
meet once a week for about an hour," said
toastmaster Jim Rhine. "Each meeting gives
everyone an opportunity to practice all kinds of
communication skills."
Rhine added Lincolnton Toastmasters will also
help members develop leadership skills.
"Members build
leadership skills by organizing and conducting
meetings and motivating others to help them. Club
leadership roles and a leadership development
program also offer opportunities to learn and
practice," said Rhine. "Just as
Toastmasters members learn to speak simply by
speaking, they learn leadership by leading."
