MAIDEN - Lena Josephine Carrigan Killian of Maiden, NC passed peacefully away, surrounded by her loving family and friends on July 4th at 2:30 AM at Conover Rehab and Nursing in Conover, NC.  She was lifted up in prayers and singing as she was given over into the hands of God.

Daughter of the late John and Molly Smith Carrigan, she was born on May 10, 1919 in Alexander County.

Lena was the beloved wife of the late Earl C. Killian and cherished mother to Billy J. Parlier of Morganton, Cherie Berry of Newton, Patricia Deaton of Newton and Earl C. Killian, Jr. of Charlotte.  She was preceded in death by a baby son, Bobby Gene Parlier, three sisters, and two brothers.

Left behind with many fond memories of their loving grandmother are five grandchildren:  Kimberlee Taylor, Stephanie Taylor, Candice Hawkins, Lisa Koperski, and Billy J. Parlier II.

Lena also delighted in her five great grandchildren, Brooke Hawkins, Jacob Koperski, Cias Hawkins, Tony Koperski, and Corey Parlier as well as her beloved brother, George “Buck” Carrigan and many  cherished nieces and nephews.

Endowed with strong Christian faith and the gift of hospitality, her door was always open to friends and family for whatever they might need, be it help with a project, a sympathetic ear or just a good home-cooked meal.  Her career as a seamstress and sample clothing maker and her love of crafts made excellent use of her extensive sewing talents and creative eye.

Lena had been an avid painter with her landscapes gracing the walls of her children’s homes.  She loved shopping, going places and working in her yard.  She also loved to dance.  In 2007, approx. six hundred people at the Carolina Star Conference in Greensboro had the pleasure of seeing Lena dance with her daughter, Commissioner of Labor, Cherie Berry.

Lena was a faithful member of Living Word Church in Maiden, NC.

Services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home in Maiden, NC.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 -3:00 PM.  The burial will follow at Maiden City Cemetery beside her beloved husband, Earl.
