PUMPKIN
CENTER -- A Lincolnton woman is
critically injured after she loses
control of her car on East Highway 150
and Ivey Church Road.
According
to North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper
J.M. Futrell, Nina Keith was traveling
west on Highway 150 when she tried to
make a right turn onto Ivey Church Road
near Pumpkin Center Self Storage.
Futrell
said that Keith was traveling too fast
while making the turn.
"She
lost control of her vehicle and hit a
stop sign," said Futrell. "Then
she hit a tree, which caused her to spin
around, hit a chain-link fence and plow
over an embankment."
Futrell
called Keith's injuries serious and
life-threatening. Authorities wanted to
airlift her to Carolinas Medical Center
in Charlotte; however, it was too foggy
in Charlotte for Med Center Air to fly
out.
Keith
was taken by Lincoln EMS to Charlotte. A
hospital spokesperson early Tuesday
morning said Keith had not yet been
admitted to the hospital.
Pumpkin
Center firefighters arriving on the scene
noticed a child car seat in the vehicle.
Since the victim was unresponsive,
authorities searched the area around the
accident scene to see if anyone had been
ejected from the vehicle.
Keith
was the only occupant in the vehicle.
Futrell
estimated Keith's speed at the time of
the accident based on the amount of skid
marks before and after impact. There were
a total of 274 feet of skid marks.
"She
was probably going about 60-65 miles per
hour, and that's an estimate," said
Futrell.
