The Lincolnton Police Department’s K9 officer has been selected as the new school resource officer (SRO) of Lincolnton High School.

Officer Brandon Hunsucker has been serving as the interim SRO since the start of the 2011-12 school year.

He was originally appointed the position after Sheriff David Carpenter fired former SRO and Sheriff’s Deputy Dale Rex in August 2011.

Carpenter notified City of Lincolnton officials days before the start of school he would not appoint another deputy to the position.

Hunsucker has been with the police department since 2006. He was one of two officers who applied for the job.

Lincolnton Police Sgt. Willie Vaughn was the other officer. Vaughn was the first SRO at Lincolnton High School in 1997 when former Sheriff Barbara Pickens started the program.

“I wish Officer Hunsucker the best,” said Vaughn. “I know he will do a good job.”
