Heavy Rains Pass Through Area Causing Problems

By Jon Mayhew (Lincoln County) – Heavy rains passing through Lincoln County Sunday evening may have been the cause of several problems including trees down across the county, traffic accidents and debris washing up in roadways.

Authorities reported trees down on Cat Square Road in Vale; Gastonia Highway in Lincolnton; and in northern Lincoln County near Maiden Highway and Highway 321.

Around 12:30am Monday, authorities reported a storage building blew into the roadway on Hilltop Road near West Highway 150. Crouse firefighters were called to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Also around 12:30am, North 321 and Pumpkin Center firefighters were notified McCorkle Road at the bridge was flooded as well. Union firefighters were told Howards Creek Mill Road at the old mill in western Lincoln County was also shut down due to flooding.

Authorities were notified Hallman Mill Road at the county line was shut down due to flooding, as well as the bridge at Leonards Fork Church Road.

Sunday night, authorities in eastern Lincoln County were called to a pair of separate accidents.

East Lincoln firefighters were called to a wreck that happened around 8:10pm when a single vehicle split a telephone pole in half, knocking down power lines and closing the 6000 block of Old Plank Road near South Ingleside Farm Road. The vehicle may have landed in a ditch.

Duke Energy was called out for the pole. The driver refused treatment by Lincoln EMS. The road was expected to be closed down for up to five hours.

Denver firefighters were called to a wreck around 8:45pm at the intersection of Campground Road and Catawba Burris Road off Highway 16. There was no word on injuries or how many vehicles were involved.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating both accidents.

Just after 9:30pm Sunday, Lincolnton Police reported debris had washed in the intersection of South Government Street and Motz Avenue.

Around 10pm, police also told The Carolina Scoop Lincolnton firefighters have been called to East Main Street in front of Family Dollar, where at least two feet of water collected in the roadway. There are unconfirmed reports two vehicles are stuck in the water.

Early Monday morning, police sources told The Carolina Scoop one lane of East Main Street was blocked in front of Family Dollar. Police also reported the bridge at North Flint Street was shut down due to excessive water.
