LINCOLNTON - Harold George Benfield, age 85, of Calvary Church Road, Lincolnton, NC, formerly of Augusta, GA, passed away February 7, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Gaston County on December 7, 1923 to the late P. G. Benfield and Blanche Abernathy Benfield.

He was a charter member of Crestview Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, deacon for 45 years, minister of music for 25 years, was on three building committees, and other various committees. He was a World War II veteran of the Navy, from 1942-1945 and served in the South Pacific theater. He retired from Kimberly Clark as a maintenance supervisor.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alene Lawing Benfield.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol Pence of Edinburgh, VA, two brothers, Jennings Benfield and Jack Benfield, both of Lincolnton, NC, one sister, Evelyn Haynes of Lincolnton, NC, four grandchildren, Len Pence, Randy, Pence, Kimberly Hilton, and Michael Benfield, and four great grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday, February 9, 2009 at 6:00 PM at E. F. Drum Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 PM. The interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, GA at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Poteet Funeral Home is Augusta will be assisting E. F. Drum Funeral Home. Mr. Benfield will lie in state at Poteet Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 PM Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial maybe made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
