MAIDEN - Harold Smith Caldwell, Sr., age 86, of Maiden Hwy., Maiden passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.

Born August 28, 1922 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late David H. Caldwell and the late Fannie Murray Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell was a member of East Maiden Baptist Church and had served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a veteran serving his country as a US Marine in World War II. He was owner and operator of Caldwell Shell Station for 30 plus years.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Lavonia Laney Caldwell, stepmother, Ester Laney Caldwell, two sisters, Flona C. Beard and Gladys C. Stewart, four brothers, Ray, Ralph, Roy and Rev. Harding Caldwell preceded him in death.

Survivors include:

1 Son: Harold Caldwell, Jr., of Maiden.

1 Brother: Harley Caldwell and wife, Stella of Newton.

3 Sisters: Grace Sherrill of Denver; Ruby Hubbard of Newton, Juanita Hawn and husband, Clyde of Maiden.

2 Sisters-in-law: Bryte Laney of Lincolnton; Barbara Laney of Hickory.

A Number of Caring Nieces and Nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at East Maiden Baptist Church in Maiden with the Rev. Nathaniel Austin and Chaplain Larry Bolick officiating.

A Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Maiden City Cemetery in Maiden.

The family will receive friends, prior to the service, at the church on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:15 p.m., East Maiden Baptist Church in Maiden.
