LINCOLNTON –
A Lincolnton man tells authorities that a West Water Street man pulled a sword on him out of a cane, calling himself “God.” By late Thursday night, “God” was in custody after he spit and cursed authorities in a government building.

A chain of incidents ended with William Lathan Reynolds ending up in jail on several charges.

Starting around 1pm, Reynolds told police he was approached by a Broome Street resident in the parking lot of the Lincolnton Farmers Market on West Church Street.

In the first encounter with law enforcement, Reynolds claimed he was pushed down after telling Thomas Ford he was looking at a truck and that Reynolds was “God.”

Within an hour, Sgt. John Caudle encountered both Reynolds and Ford again. Caudle said that Ford, meantime, observed Reynolds “messing around” several cars in the parking lot.

Around 6:45pm, Officer Mark Sain responded to a residence on Bonview Avenue, after Reynolds tried to break into the residence.

“The resident and the witness told the suspect to leave,” said Sain.

Reynolds wasn’t leaving without a fight, however, as he broke the glass out of the front window of the residence.

“The suspect left on foot and was located at the One Stop at the intersection of West Main Street and North Grove Street,” said Sain.

Reynolds was arrested and taken to the Lincoln County Magistrate’s Office, where he became disruptive, cursing at officers and spitting on the floor.

Besides charging Reynolds with attempted breaking and entering as well as injury to real property, Officer Sain charged Reynolds with being intoxicated and disruptive.

As Sain was leaving with Reynolds, Reynolds began spitting in Sain’s patrol car. When Sain confronted the suspect, asking him to stop spitting in the officer’s car, Reynolds spit on Sain.

Officer Sain and Lt. Kenny Shrum took Reynolds back to the magistrate’s office, where Reynolds spit on Lt. Shrum.

“After the incident, Sgt. Jeremy Wilson put a mask on Reynolds,” said Sain.

Reynolds also faces charges of two counts of malicious conduct by a prisoner. He was taken to the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $2,300 secured bond.
