WRECK VICTIM HAD LINCOLN CONNECTION
Funeral for Chastity Spivey planned for Saturday in Maiden

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLN COUNTY -- As the family of Chastity Spivey prepares to say goodbye Saturday at the 23-year-old's funeral in Maiden, family is also praying and hoping Spivey's two children continue recovering from a tragic ordeal the trio suffered Tuesday night.

The Carolina Scoop has learned Chastity Spivey was born in Lincoln County December of 1984.

Family members said the children -- Taylor Peyton, 5, and John Peyton, 2 -- are still in critical condition Thursday night at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Tuesday before 9 p.m., Spivey and her two children were traveling on Gladden Drive near Springs East Road in northern Lincoln County, when Spivey lost control of her SUV and ended up in a pond, upside down in about five feet of water.

Spivey's fiance was in a vehicle in front of Spivey. He stopped, jumped into the water and while trying to make entry into the vehicle, screamed for help. Neighbors unsuccessfully tried to get into the vehicle and, according to a neighbor that was in the water, the fire department got into the vehicle, rescuing the trio.

None of the vehicle occupants had pulses when they were pulled from the water, according to authorities. They were all three revived on the way to the hospital but Spivey died early Wednesday morning in Charlotte.

Thursday night, the children's aunt Amy Carden said the thing people can do the most is pray for the children.

"That's what we all can do for them right now," she said.

Family members said John gave them hope Thursday, moving his arms and legs and coughing. While doctors were able to slightly reduce his level of sedation, the toddler remained sedated.

The same, however, can't be said for his older sister, Taylor. Thursday, doctors put a tube in her lungs and are using antibiotics to try and reverse damage sustained when the little girl went without air for several minutes. According to family, the little girl is unresponsive and is on a feeding tube.

Doctors are telling the family they won't know the extent of the children's injuries for several more days.

Spivey's visitation will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Burke Mortuary in Maiden, followed by her funeral at 11:45 a.m.

Spivey was born Dec. 14, 1984 in Lincoln County. She was the daughter of Barry Dean Spivey and Denise Grant Spivey of Newton. Spivey was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. Besides being survived by her two children, fiance John Peyton and her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Charles and Bobbie Spivey of Lincolnton and Ray Grant and Margaret Painter, both of Maiden.

She is also survived by her great-grandmother, Emma Waldrop of Lincolnton, as wekk as two sisters, two nephews, five aunts and four uncles.

Memorials may be made to the Spivey family, care of Cool Park Baptist Church.
