For What It's Worth
09/06/08
We are now
fully submerged in two seasons, hurricane and election. And I
wonder which one is more aggravating and frustrating than the
other.
My 81 year old mother lives in Surfside Beach, SC but when one of
her four children cannot be there with her she stays in an
assisted living facility in Georgetown, SC. Currently she is in
Georgetown. Jon has been driving me insane with worry over my
mother's safety with Tropical Storm Hannah on her way. I keep
trying to comvince him, and maybe myself a little as well, that
she is being taken good care of where she is. Jon's response is
"That's what all those people in New Orleans said until all
of the caretakers evacuated and left them stranded." I have
been on the phone for days trying to convince my mother and my
brother and sisters that I will go get her and leave all
questions and fears behind. Nobody thought it was necessary.
After talking with my mother on Friday I feel some better. They
are boarding up the doors and windows, the daytime staff is
staying overnight and the nightime staff will be there as well.
If conditions get bad enough, the residents will all go to the
dining room where they will be in one place and easier to care
for in an emergency situation. Early in the week when Hannah was
a hurricane, plans were being made to evacuate all of the
residents to the midlands area of SC.
I appreciate Jon's concern for my mother, but he nearly caused me
to lose my mind with worry!
My mother is a news junkie. She watches Fox News 24 hours a day.
If the television is on, then it is on the Fox News channel. When
I am with her I too watch Fox News 24 hours day. When I was
visiting recently the presidential candidates were gearing up for
their conventions and choosing their running mates. As tired as I
got of watching the same thing over and over again, I must admit
the process that takes place to choose our president is
fascinating. Our founding fathers put a lot of prayer and thought
into how to set up our government and with all of its flaws, it
is still the best in the world.
The Carolina Scoop is not endorsing any political party or
candidate on the local, state, or national level. We are posting
some quotes by our founding fathers right now and we may run
other politically oriented quotes but that is not an endorsement.
We have the greatest freedom in the world by being able to voice
our opinion even if everyone disagrees with us. We have the right
to vote. I have been saying for several years that if we don't
use that right we are going to lose it. Maybe this year with a
woman and a black man both on the political forefront that will
be the catalyst we need to get us out and voting.
The only way we can be sure we keep the freedoms that our fathers
and brothers have lost their lives to preserve is to put the
person in office that will preserve those rights. Who is that
person? Vote and then we will all know.
THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN NC IS OCTOBER 10.

know about how to register. If you aren't able to go to the

providing transportation. Don't just sit back and do nothing.
That is NOT the American way.
