TALK OF NEW FIRE STATION?

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLNTON –
During the first day of the three-day budget workshop at Lincolnton City Hall, fire chief Mike Lee told city leaders he would like for them to consider future plans for a more centrally located fire station.

During Lee’s presentation, he told city leaders that having only one man and truck in Boger City was “unacceptable.”

Lee suggested the city look into a future fire station to better serve the citizens in the eastern part of the city.

“Right now, we’re facing 11 stoplights in the city in running a call to east Lincolnton,” said Lee. “With high traffic numbers, that slows down our response time crossing Generals Boulevard and East Main Street to up to seven minutes to Barbecue King, and that’s unacceptable.”

The Carolina Scoop learned last week mayor David Black is working on a plan to centrally located Lincolnton’s fire station, which underwent remodeling a couple of years ago. The current fire station would be remodeled again for the police department.

Black is planning on pitching the idea at a future city council meeting.

City manager Jeff Emory brought of the topic of a satellite facility for both the fire and police departments.

“There are needs there,” said Emory, adding one suggestion for a location be in the Oaklawn area of the city.

Lee said that location wasn’t “feasible.”

“It’s more feasible to have a location on Salem Church Road,” said Lee. “The location there would give us a three to four minute response time in the entire city.”

Lee said he didn’t want to take anything away from Boger City because they are a volunteer department, while Lincolnton is a career fire department.

“We want to save life and property,” said Lee. “That’s why we need to get to calls more quickly.”
