Feeder
Calf Grading and Marketing Workshop
By: Jeff Carpenter
NC Cooperative Extension
Area Specialized Agent, Livestock
All local beef cattle producers
are invited to Harward Brothers Livestock
Market in Turnersburg on March 26 at 6 PM
for this informative program on
evaluating and marketing feeder calves.
Even producers that dont sell on
one of the state sponsored graded sales
you will benefit from this program. Every
order buyer that purchases calves on the
weekly auction has to be familiar with
USDA grades and specifications in order
to purchase the kind of calves their
customers have asked for, so in that
regard all calves get graded just like
those on the state sponsored sales.
Live calves will be used for discussions
on grades, breed designations, condition,
shrink, fill, health, disposition,
weighing conditions and the Beef Quality
Assurance sale protocol. All these
factors are used by feeder calf buyers to
determine an appropriate bid for
individual calves or groups of calves.
Producers that make themselves aware of
the differences in these factors can be
more successful in producing and
marketing the kind of calves that bring
the best price.
The program begins at 6 PM and a
sponsored meal will be served, so call in
your attendance numbers to your local
Extension Center by March 23.
