LINCOLNTON – Julio Armando Sandi, 21, Grier Street, Lincolnton, has turned himself in less than a week to face a misdemeanor death by vehicle charge after turning left in front of a motorcyclist at the intersection of Arney Street and Huss Street.

Sandi was driving a dark colored Toyota at the time of the accident, where he told Sgt. Willie Vaughn he didn’t see Christopher Michael Rogers, 31, 352 Colonial Village Drive.

Rogers tried to avoid the accident even though he struck Sandi’s vehicle. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Sgt. Vaughn, Sandi turned himself in at the Lincoln County Magistrate’s Office.

“He was escorted by his family and his attorney, Todd Pomeroy,” said Vaughn.

Bond on the charge was set at $5,000 unsecured. Sandi was released from the Magistrate’s Office.

The accident blocked Huss Street from East Main Street to Green Street. The intersection of Huss and Arney Streets was cordoned off with yellow fire tape as authorities investigated the accident.

Rogers’ funeral was Thursday in Walhalla, South Carolina.

While the listed address was Colonial Village Drive, Rogers’ obituary on The Carolina Scoop listed the address as Landers Church Road.

Rogers attended UNC Charlotte then served in the Navy on the USS Cole for nine years. He was also a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force and proudly served his country in Operation Desert Storm and in Afghanistan as well.

He is survived by his parents, Jackie Ann Atkinson Smith and Michael Phillip Rogers; brothers Phillip Allen Rogers of Lincolnton; Joshua Dwayne Vandiver of Georgia; and Cecil Edward Smith III and Christian Elliott Smith both of South Carolina; sisters Leah Michelle Rogers of Charlotte; Melissa Ann Parker of Georgia; Emily Ann Smith of South Carolina; and Martin and Cynthia Reynolds of Lincolnton.

Also stepmother Sherry Rogers of Georgia; stepfather Cecil Edward Smith Jr. of South Carolina; grandpreants Jo Ann Atkinson of South Carolina; Clarence and Barbara Rogers of South Carolina; and Tommy and PJ Williams of Iron Station; and uncle and aunt Harold and Helen Redman of Lake Norman.
