HOWARDS CREEK Authorities
spent most of the weekend sifting through
the rubble of what was once a residence
on Dorset Lane after a four-alarm fire
leveled a mobile home Saturday afternoon.
According to emergency management
director Susan Spake, exploding propane
tanks were not the cause of the fire that
leveled an unoccupied home off Bob Burgin
Road around 2:40pm.
The propane tanks were vented and
did pose a danger to both firefighters
and neighbors, said Spake.

Firefighters
douse hot spots on a mobile home in the
1000 block of Dorset Lane on Saturday
afternoon.
Saturday night, the State Bureau of
Investigation arson investigators along
with Spake and detectives with the
Lincoln County Sheriffs Office
combed through damage, looking for clues
to the origin of the fire.
Were interviewing neighbors
and the fire remains very much under
investigation, said one of the
detectives.
Howards Creek firefighters
assisted by Crouse; Lincolnton; and South
Fork battled the blaze that
threatened at least two nearby
residences.
I was the first firefighter on the
scene and the trailer was fully
engulfed, said Howards Creek Fire
Department Lt. Ben Lackey. The
neighbors told me nobody was home at the
time of the fire.
Spake confirmed the information.
Nobodys lived here in about a
year, said Spake.
Duke Energy was called out to remove the
meter from the residence. Authorities
wont say whether or not the fire
was arson at this point.
None of the firefighters suffered
injuries in the blaze. While the fire was
under control within 30 minutes,
firefighters stayed on hand into the
night to assist investigators where
possible.
The story was on The Carolina Scoop
Saturday afternoon as part of breaking
news coverage.
