Residents Go to
the Polls Tomorrow
LINCOLNTON --
With a little over 100
Lincolnton residents taking part in early
voting over the last two weeks, elections
officials are hoping for a better turnout
Tuesday.
Two Lincolnton City
Council seats -- held by Fred Houser and
Carroll Heavner -- as well as the Mayor's
spot are up for grabs when the polls open
6:30am across Lincolnton. The polls close
at 7:30pm.
Tim Shain and Jay
Thomas are challenging Houser and
Heavner, while John Gilleland is
challenging Mayor David Black. Black is
completing his first two-year term as
mayor.
There are more than
5,900 registered voters in the city
according to Lincoln County Elections
Director Judy Caudill.
Voters who vote a
straight Republican or Democratic ticket
will not be automatically voting for
candidate Thomas, who is running for
Heavner's ward three seat.
Thomas is listed as
"unaffiliated" on the ballot.
"If a voter
wants to vote for Jay Thomas and they
vote straight party for either party,
they must select Jay Thomas' name because
he is unaffiliated," said Caudill.
Nearly 3,000
registered voters in Lincolnton are
Democrats, while 1,729 are Republicans.
More than 1,200 voters are unaffiliated
and six are Libertarian.
More than half of
registered voters in Lincolnton are
females -- 3,336 -- while 2,610 are
males.
Voters will be
casting ballots only in the
above-mentioned races.
"We won't have
as many voters as we would have if we
were in a presidential election
year," said Caudill. "And with
a county election next year, we'll have a
larger voter turnout."
