Early Voting Ends Saturday;
City Elections Tuesday

The Carolina Scoop learned on Thursday voters who vote a straight Republican or Democratic ticket in early voting or during the elections next Tuesday will not be automatically voting for ward 3 city council candidate Jay Thomas.

Thomas is listed as “unaffiliated” on the ballot. He is running against incumbent Democrat Carroll Heavner.

“If a voter wants to vote for Jay Thomas and they vote straight party for either Democrat or Republican, they must select Jay Thomas' name because he is unaffiliated,” said Lincoln County Elections Director Judy Caudill.

The Carolina Scoop has provided a link to the sample ballot in both English and Spanish.

“Because of the increasing Hispanic population, I printed a sample ballot (in both languages),” said Caudill.

As of Friday afternoon around 4pm, 102 of 5,969 registered voters have taken advantage of early voting in Lincolnton elections. Voters who want to take advantage of early voting have until 1pm Saturday.

Two candidates – Thomas and Tim Shain – have already voted early. Shain is a Republican running for the ward 1 city council seat against incumbent Fred Houser.

Republican mayoral candidate John Gilleland is challenging Democrat Mayor David Black, who is in his first term as mayor.

Caudill said polls in the city election are open from 6:30am – 7:30am Tuesday.

Turnout in the elections is expected to be low.

“We won’t have as many voters as we would have if we were in a presidential election year,” said Caudill. “And with a county election next year, we’ll have about 7,000 early voters come through the office (at that time).”

Caudill said of the 58 absentee ballots mailed out since Oct. 5, 43 ballots have been returned as of Thursday. Voters with absentee ballots have until 5pm Monday, Nov. 2, to get the ballots mailed in to the elections office.

Demographics and party affiliation may play active rolls in whether or not the incumbents remain in office, according to numbers revealed by Caudill.

Of the 5,969 eligible voters in the City of Lincolnton, roughly half (2,999) are Democrats; 1,729 are Republicans; 1,235 are unaffiliated and six are Libertarian.

More than half of registered voters in Lincolnton are females – 3,336 – while 2,610 are males.

“There were 23 people who wouldn’t say what they were,” said Caudill.

People within the city who want to vote early can go to the James W. Warren Citizens Center, going to the Board of Elections office on the second floor.
