LINCOLNTON -- A groundbreaking on a new hospital facility for Lincoln County was held Sunday at the site of the new hospital on McAlister Road. The groundbreaking marks the start of construction of the new $85 million hospital that would replace the current Carolinas Medical Center Lincoln on Gamble Drive.

"The new hospital represents the single-largest healthcare investment ever in Lincoln County," said hospital CEO and president Pete Acker. "The goal of building the new facility is to offer a broader range of services and quality care close to home. Lincoln County is a dynamic and growing area."

The new hospital will be located on 6.4 acres across from the Boger City Fire Department.

Lincolnton mayor David Black, along with Lincoln County Commisison chairman Tom Anderson, along with CMCL board of trustee chairman Danny Richard and Carolinas Healthcare System's CEO Michael Tarwater, attended the groundbreaking event.

“This new state of the art hospital facility along with an engaged and extremely competent medical community will help ensure that the latest in healthcare will be available in Lincoln County for generations to come,” Tarwater said.

In addition to the groundbreaking ceremony, the community had a chance to tour the Med Center Air helicopter, to participate in a blood drive at the Boger City Fire Department and to participate in children's activities including clowns and balloon art.

Located three miles northeast of the current CMC Lincoln, the new 182,000-square-foot replacement facility will offer 101 beds, the same number of beds as the current hospital, and will anchor a medical campus that will include primary and specialty care physicians. The new CMC-Lincoln is expected to open in late 2010.
