Chinking
101:
Bring gloves if you don't want to get your hands
really dirt (clay and
lime). Please be sure to wear old clothing. A
work apron will be given to visitors
who participate in the workshop.
First, our group will fill in the space between
the upper and lower log
areas of the log structure (Using wood, old
bricks, pinecombs, etc).
We will be illustrating the old method and modern
method of chinking. Mix
lime, sand, clay together in a wood contain (with
period appropriate hoes
and shovels) and then we mix the contents onto
shingles or bark and fill in
the log spaces.
Modern method, we will mix up the material into a
mixer and then apply the
chinking mortar to the log space area.
Workshop for the public will be 9 am to 11:30 am.
