Catherine Carpenter Powers, 92, of Newton, died Monday, July 13, 2009 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.

Born December 26, 1916 in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph LaFayette Carpenter and Bertie Moser Carpenter.

Mrs. Powers was a veteran of the U.S. Army Women’s Corps, having served in World War II. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Powers; brothers, Ralph L. Carpenter, Jr., Jack Carpenter, Walter Carpenter, Bobby Carpenter and Richard Carpenter; and sister, Virginia Colson.

Survivors include a sister, Hazel Carpenter Schronce of Newton; brother, Howard C. Carpenter and wife Joyce of Vale; sister-in-law, Polly Carpenter of Statesville; brother-in-law, Jonas Colson of Claremont; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in the chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover with the Rev. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Claremont.

The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2126 St. John’s Church Road, Conover, NC 28613.

The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover, NC.
