LINCOLNTON
-- Authorities are warning
customers of one bank to beware for a
fraud scam involving cell phone text
messages.
According
to a Lincolnton Police Department police
report, officer Spencer Summers responded
to Carolina Trust Bank at 901 E. Main
Street Monday after bank employees said
they received more than 100 phone calls
about the text messages.
The
messages stated that customer's bank
cards had been deactivated, that the
customer would have to call a special
telephone number that had not been given
to anyone within the bank.
The case
of the text messages may stem from an
incident where money may have been taken
from a Lincoln account in New York.
According
to Summers report, the incident may have
started in New York.
Summers
was later told by bank employees the
number had changed to a toll-free number,
but the email isn't from Carolina Trust
Bank.
The text
message asks customers for their 16-digit
card number.
