An off-duty Lincolnton Police detective
suffers a hand injury after
being bit by a Charlotte man in Shelby,
where 48-year-old
Thomas Colon had to be tasered four times
by Shelby Police
officers.
The incident happened Friday according to
an on-file report at
the Shelby Police Department.
According to the report, detective Lt.
Brian Green noticed Colon
driving recklessly and
carelessly before the incident
happened
on Cherryville Road.
"Every few feet, he was weaving in
his lsne," said Green.
The suspect finally came to a stop near
Highway 180 to
check on his vehicle. Colon then
"took off" according to Green,
traveling at a high rate of speed.
"He even ran off the road and hit a
driveway, running through
people's yards in the process," said
Green. "Eventually, he came
to a stop in front of the Dover
YMCA."
Green said another motorist stopped and
ran up to the vehicle,
taking possession of the keys as Colon
looked at the back of his truck.
"The motorist threw the keys at me,
and as I was picking up the
keys, Colon got in my face," said
Green.
When Green began defending himself,
that's when he was bit
on the hand. Green wasn't injured in the
incident.
"It left a red mark on my
hand," said Green.
Even after Shelby police arrived on the
scene, Colon refused to
comply with commands. An officer first
stunned the suspect in
the chest, but that didnt stop him
according to the report.
Colon even tried to grab the taser after
the first shock, causing
the second shock to the back.
A third shock had no effect, while the
fourth shock enabled four
officers to come in and wrestle Colon to
the ground.
Cleveland County EMS was dispatched to
assess Colon's
possible medical condition and injuries,
which were reportedly
minor.
The report indicated Colon became
cooperative while in the care
of Cleveland EMS. Colon was charged with
resisting a public
officer.
Green later discovered the suspect
suffered from a medical condition that
resulted in the incident.
