VEGETABLE GARDENING
FOR BEGINNERS

By: Kevin D. Starr
County Extension Director
N.C. Cooperative Extension Service

With the increasing interest in local food, it seems like a lot of people are interested in raising a small vegetable garden for the first time. There are three programs planned in which you may be interested. The first one is being sponsored by Daniel Stowe Botanic Garden in Belmont. I’ll be speaking on the topic, “The Vegetable Garden You Always Wanted.” The program will he held at the garden from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. The cost is $5 for members and $7 for non-members. You can register on the garden’s website at www.dsbg.org under events or call them at 704-829-1252.

I will give this same program at two other locations. The first is the Florence Soule Shanklin Memorial Library in Denver. That program will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16 in the library’s meeting room. There is no charge but we do need to ask you to pre-register by calling us at 704-736-8452.

For those in the Lincolnton area, the program will be held on Thursday, April 2 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The location will be the first floor demonstration kitchen in the James W. Warren Citizens Center. This program is being sponsored by the Extension and Community Association. Once again, there is no charge but please call us at 704-736-8461 to pre-register.

I want to emphasize that these programs are aimed at folks who have no or limited experience with a vegetable garden. We’ll talk about the basics such as choosing a site, how to prepare the soil, when to plant different vegetables, and more.

Vegetable gardening is a great hobby that provides benefits such as fresh vegetables, exercise, and stress relief. For most beginners, it’s best to start with a small garden. Raised beds will be a good solution for some. However, a few folks may want to go with a large, traditional garden that will give them extra produce to can or freeze or maybe even sell at the farmers market.
I hope to see you at one of these programs. If you can’t make it, you can request a copy of our “Home Vegetable Gardening” publication. It’s also available on the web.

If you have questions, please call Cooperative Extension at 704-736-8452.
