CONCORD -- There's a lot of "buzz" in Concord this weekend for what a couple recently found in their 100-year-old home.
The couple rents the residence on Odell School Road from Amy Jones, who told WSOC-TV of the amazing find; bees who have made a hive inside a wall that's actually the size of the wall.
The renters first discovered honey dripping through the wall in the upstairs bedroom, which was unoccupied. Jones and her husband went to check the unusual find out and discovered another unusual find.
"Not only was it honey but the bee keeper we called said there was a hive in the wall," said Jones, adding the bees got in through a tiny crack in the siding and have been "buzzing" about their business for up to the last four years.
Saturday around 10 a.m., the Jones' met with the bee keeper at the residence. The goal wasn't to exterminate the bees; it was to protect them. Some 60,000 of theml
"It is very important to us not to kill them, as they are good for the environment," said Jones.
A man with a bee vacuum sucked out the bees. Jones said the fun was just beginning at that point.
"It's removing the honeycomb and honey," said Jones, adding the operation may require up to five large buckets.
The homeowner told WSOC-TV the remaining 1,000 bees will find a new home.
"There's no hive or queen bee, so they'll find their way out," said Jones.
