ALLIED WASTE GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLN COUNTY -- Non-profit organizations that provide programs serving Lincoln County may be eligible to receive part of a $50,000 pool of grant monies through the Allied Waste Grant program.

Applications for the program are now being acccepted through April 10, 2009.

The committee will then meet to review the applications and award the grants. Recipients will then be contacted regarding a date when the awards will be presented.

Applications for the grants, worth up to $10,000 each, will be available at the following locations: Main branch, East Lincoln branch and West Lincoln branch of the library; the James W. Warren Citizens Center reception area; and on the Lincoln County website: www.lincolncounty.org.

“We intend to make reasonable efforts to distribute funds equally throughout the county,” said Harry Huss, who chairs the non-profit grant program committee that is charged with evaluating and dispersing the money. “We’re particularly interested in funding worthwhile projects and causes in a way that provides each township with an equal distribution.”

Allied Waste provided $50,000 in funding for the program as part of its January 2004 franchise agreement to operate the Lake Norman Landfill. The landfill handles construction and demolition waste.

“We are pleased for the ongoing privilege of serving the residents and businesses of Lincoln County, and we are pleased that funds from the landfill are directly benefiting the community,” said Brad Green, General Manager, Charlotte Area Landfills, of Allied Waste Industries.

The landfill franchise agreement provided for the creation of the grant program committee, which will make the final decision about funding allocation.

Questions about the grant program can be addressed to Delores Alfaro at 704-736-8471 or dalfaro@lincolncounty.org.
