AARP TAX-AIDE SEEKS
NEW VOLUNTEERS

STAFF REPORTS
The AARP Tax-Aide, a free income tax
preparation service, is seeking
volunteers for the next filing season.
The Organization provides a complete tax
preparation service, free of charge, to
all qualified taxpayers, with emphasis
placed on those with low to middle
incomes and those 60 years of age or
older. This service is administered
nationwide by the AARP Foundation and
sponsored by AARP and IRS. You do not
need to be an AARP member.
This service will be offered Saturdays
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the
Lincolnton Branch of Gaston College
Lincoln Campus, 511 South Aspen
Street, Room 212. The site will open
January 31, February 7, 21, 28 and March
21, and will be directed by Local
Coordinator Marshall Shytle.
Tax Counselor training is provided and
trainees must be familiar with operating
a computer. The training covers tax laws
as well as how to use TaxWise, the IRS
software used to prepare tax returns.
Volunteers receive resource guides on tax
law and TaxWise to use throughout the
training and the tax season.
Volunteers must pass certification
testing and correctly complete computer
exercises using the IRS software. The
certification tests must be completed
before the end of January. The training,
practice, and the tests cover most
situations you will experience during the
actual season.
The AARP Tax-Aide Program does not
prepare highly complex returns for
taxpayers. North Carolina sites also
prepare the NC State return. TaxWise does
most of the work for you for both the
Federal and State returns and most
returns are filed electronically to the
IRS and the State of NC. All tax returns
are quality checked by another counselor
or the Local Coordinator before they are
filed. Counselors are not legally
responsible for the accuracy of the data
on the tax return. The taxpayer is
responsible for the accuracy of the
information used to complete the return.
As a Counselor, you will work one on one
with taxpayers. Should you need help, the
LC will assist you with problems. You
will find that site is operated on a
professional but stress free and friendly
level. You will meet many interesting
people who are very appreciative of the
service you are providing. You will also
get a great deal of personal satisfaction
from your volunteer efforts.
If you think you might be interested and
would like to know more,
please call Marshall Shytle at 704 922
0383.
