FARM-CITY
WEEK
BY
KEVIN STARR
AUGUST 1, 2012
Planning is almost complete for the
2012 Farm-City Week celebration in
Lincoln County. The Farm-City
Week concept was developed
by Kiwanis International in the
1950s as a way to promote
communication among rural and urban
residents in communities across the
nation.
Cooperative Extension is again
facilitating Farm-City Week with the
support of our sponsors. Carolina
Farm Credit, the Lincoln County Apple
Festival, Lincoln County Farm Bureau,
and the Lincolnton-Lincoln County
Chamber of Commerce are confirmed as
sponsors at this point.
The first event will be a free
pancake breakfast on Tuesday, August
14 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. The location
will be the auditorium of the James
W. Warren Citizens Center in
Lincolnton. This free event will
feature pancakes with all sorts of
toppings including local
blackberries, peaches, honey, and
fruit syrups. A program will be
presented on the farmland protection
plan which is being developed for
Lincoln County. Even though there is
no charge, you need to make a
reservation by calling 704-736-8452.
There will be a farmers market dinner
at Rock Springs School in Denver on
Wednesday, August 15 from 7:00
p.m.-8:30 p.m. The meal will be
prepared by Harvest Moon Grille in
Charlotte. You can bring a picnic
blanket or use the tables and chairs
provided. A picnic spot decorating
contest is available for those who
would like to participate. Tickets
are $15 and must be purchased in
advance. Contact the Extension office
at 704-736-8452 for more information
or go to http://go.ncsu.edu/farmcitysupper and purchase tickets
online.
To wind up Farm-City Week, there will
be a farm tour on Friday, August 17
from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The starting
point will be the demonstration
kitchen on the first floor of the
James W. Warren Citizens Center in
Lincolnton. Well begin with a
breakfast biscuit and then visit
farms including a dairy, a grain
producer, and a fruit operation that
features delicious homemade ice
cream. The final visit will be with
an award-winning 4-Her who will
talk about her experiences with
exhibiting livestock. There is no
charge for the tour but you must make
a reservation by calling
704-736-8452.
Help us celebrate Farm-City Week by
joining us for at least one of these
fun, educational events.
