reason for the silence was in the

General

the tower, which sends out signals for

LINCOLNTON
-- Remember the poodle skirts?
How about going to the local diner to
hang out with friends or cruising the
streets with the top down, listening to
popular tunes of the day?
For a
few short hours Sunday, people from
across the Charlotte region called
downtown Lincolnton a cruising
destination, as downtown streets were
closed for the fall cruise-in.
Organizer
Mike Silman has been putting two
cruise-ins on for the past several years.
One to coincide with Memorial Day and one
to coincide with Veterans Day.
"It's
a way to honor the veterans of Lincoln
County," said Silman, while standing
on the corner of First United Methodist
Church. "And while we honor the
vets, we pick a charity each show to
benefit with what we raise."

At our most recent
Master Gardener class, we talked about
how plants are propagated. While most of
us are familiar with starting new plants
from seeds and cuttings, one of the most
fascinating ways to propagate new plants
is by budding and grafting.
In most forms of grafting, a stem portion
of a desired plant (referred to as the scion) is attached to
the stem of another plant (referred to as
the rootstock). Once the scion begins to
grow, it will form the top of the new
plant. All new growth originating below
the graft will be removed. If youve
seen a weeping cherry tree that has a
straight trunk and then weeps at the top
of that trunk, youve seen a classic
example of a grafted plant.
Budding is a variation of grafting in

What It's Worth..... "M.

By
Jon Mayhew
As a
general rule, newspapers don't publish
reader's letters until the information is
confirmed. It's a way to make sure the
writier of the letter is legit and the
content of the letter original.
"M.
Wilson" is way off on her recent
letter.
In the
most glaring point of inaccuracy, she
writes:
".....I am
also appalled that the Carolina Scoop
actually published misquoted information
from the Crimestoppers organization, even
after being contacted and given the truth
'from the horses mouth'. Mr.

obviously printed slander anyways.....

Barry actually told Mayhew who was also
at that opening that
he thought Sheriff Daugherty and Chief

editorial that Schrum needs to step down

Billy Graham's work with presidents is
ending
By Mike Baker
Associated Press
Billy Graham's work as a pastor to
presidents is coming to an end, but he is
praying for Barack Obama as the nation's
next leader begins his work, Graham's son
said Friday on the aging evangelist's
90th birthday.
Franklin Graham said in an interview that
his father's mind remains sharp even as
his body continues to fail. But the
preacher who has counseled every
president beginning with Eisenhower is
not in line to mentor Obama.
"My father feels like his time and
day for that is over," Franklin
Graham said. "But he would certainly
like to meet (Obama) and pray with
him."
Graham's views of the world are still
respected in White House circles.
Republican presidential candidate John
McCain visited Graham at his mountainside
home during the campaign, and Obama tried
to meet Graham but wasn't able to do so
because of the preacher's poor health.
Though never partisan in his preaching,
Billy Graham is a registered Democrat.
His son expressed concern about Obama's
views on abortion and gay marriage
an issue Franklin Graham raised in a
meeting with the Illinois senator
saying that he and is father are
conservatives who believe the Bible
speaks clearly on those issues.
"President-elect Obama heard our
position," Franklin Graham said.
"And I told him that this was very
difficult for us and hard for us. It's a
moral issue that we just can't back down
on."
"But he's our president-elect, and
those positions that he holds that are
contrary to Biblical teaching, I hope
