BOAT SINKS ON LAKE NORMAN; NO INJURIES

Cliff Champion's "Championship II" houseboat burns after exploding Tuesday afternoon at Westport Marina in Denver. Searchers are looking for 19-year-old Nathan Coppick of Denver, who wea refueling the boat at the time of the explosion.

UPDATE: As of 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, searchers have recovered the body of Nate Coppick. The boat, however, is still in the water.

DENVER -- Family and friends of 19-year-old Nathan Coppick are waiting for closure as searchers begin the grim taks of recovering his body. Coppick was refueling the "Championship II," an 80-foot houseboat owned by Cliff Champion, when it exploded. Authorities said they believe the body is located below the boat.

RELAXED WATER RESTRICTIONS CONTINUED IN LINCOLN COUNTY

June 13, 2008

Due to ongoing water conservation efforts by Lincoln County water customers and relatively stable drought conditions in the North Carolina Piedmont Region, water use restrictions in Lincoln County will continue to allow all outside water use, limited to one day per week, through the month of June. This means that washing of cars, pressure washing, filling of swimming pools and other uses will be allowed for the time being.

Around 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, the Lincoln Cultural Center on East Main Street in Lincolnton was evacuated due to a fire alarm. Lincolnton Firefighters responded while people were leaving the building and have staged an engine to the closest hydrant. It's not known if the firefighters have found anything inside the building at this time.

Retired Lincolnton Police officer Bobby Poteat visited his old stomping grounds Wednesday afternoon, after having lunch with Lt. Kent Lukach (Lukach paid, which surprised everybody) and canine officer Brandon Hunsucker. Bobby took a moment to shake hands with longtime friend and former boss Chief Dean Abernathy while visiting old friends and reminiscing. Poteat retired last year after more than 30 years in law enforcement and is enjoying retirement.

An 80-foot houseboat catches fire Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. WSOC-TV's Chopper Nine Skyzoom flew over the scene at Westport Marina on Highway 16, where the boat exploded while refueling. Four people were on board: one is still missing an hour after the incident.

AUTHORITIES RESPONDING TO HOUSEBOAT EXPLOSION

4:49P.M. -- CROUSE FIREFIGHTERS HAVE BEEN CALLED TO RESPOND WITH THEIR HAZMAT UNIT TO HELP CLEAN UP A FUEL SPILL IN THE WATER. IT'S NOT KNOWN HOW MANY GALLONS HAVE SPILLED IN THE COVE BEHIND WESTPORT MARINA.

UPDATE 4:12 P.M. -- THE CAROLINA SCOOP HAS LEARNED A FEMALE JUMPED OFF THE EXPLODING HOUSEBOAT AND SWAM TO A RESIDENCE AT 7912 BLACKWOOD ROAD. SHE TOLD THE HOMEOWNERS SHE COULDN'T SEE. ANOTHER LINCOLN EMS UNIT IS EN ROUTE. AT 4:15 P.M., MEDICS ON THE SCENE SAID AT LEAST TWO PATIENTS CAME OFF THE TOP OF THE HOUSEBOAT, SUFFERING MINOR INJURIES.

4:17 P.M. -- FIRE BOATS FROM CORNELIUS, GILEAD AND EAST LINCOLN ARE PUTTING BOATS INTO THE WATER TO HELP LOOK FOR ONE VICTIM -- A WHITE MALE -- WHO IS STILL MISSING.

DENVER -- Three fire departments, Lincoln EMS and Lincoln Rescue have been dispatched to Westport Marina on Highway 16 to reports of a boat explosion.

Around 4 p.m., authorities reported an 80-foot house boat exploded on the docks of the marina causing a large fire. Firefighters from Denver, East Lincoln and Alexis responded to the scene. Firefighters from Denver reported seeing smoke coming from their station.

Authorities are calling for a rescue boat, as one person may be in the water as a result of the incident. The Carolina Scoop will have more as it becomes available.
