News Briefs
June 19, 2008

  • A 16-year old Lincoln County boy is unconcious after butting heads with another person. The incident happened Thursday night around 8:15 p.m. where authorities reported several 911 calls from 628 Storywoods Road near Tin Mine Road. The investigation is continuing and the youth was taken to CMC-Lincoln.

  • Lincolnton Firefighters were called to 202 Turner Street just after 8:30 p.m. to reports of a moped on fire. A caller into Lincoln County 911 said the moped was sitting 20 feet from the house. Someone with a garden hose had the fire out when firefighters arrived on the scene.

  • Just after 5 p.m. Thursday, police were called to the 500 block of North Flint Street to reports a man had hooked up a hose to the fire hydrant and was filling his swimming pool. We checked with police who said that people can do that if they contact the city and get a meter put on the fire hydrant to pay for the water used.

  • Many city and county law enforcement officers in Lincoln are wearing black bands over their bages to remember state highway patrol colleague David Shawn Blanton Jr., 24, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in western Lincoln County. The funeral for Blanton, who leaves a wife and two-week-old child, will have a funeral service 11am Saturday, June 21, at the George R. Stuart Auditorium at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center on Highway 19. Two memorial funds have been set-up for Blanton, who valiantly served the NCHP for two years.

Publisher's note: This is in response to the newsletter from the Trinity Farms Subdivision recenty submitted to "What's On Your Mind?" If something is on your mind that you would like to share, e-mail it to us at mail@thecaroinascoop.com. Please include your name on all submissions.

I am sure the letter was sent out with good intentions, but sadly Lincoln County lacks many ordinance laws, and given this issue along with the simple fact that this neighborhood lies out in a rural setting, alot of the residents there take this personal. Sadly the area is run down, and an eye sore. I would not want to live there. I am sure initially when the area was planned, it would have and could have been a nice place to live. One of the residents in the story is on probation now for drug trafficking so I am sure he wants the area to remain run down. I hope one day Lincoln County will tighten up their laws and thus create their county, especially the rural area, a more pleasing place to reside. What is ironic it that within a short few miles off of Furnace Rd not far away from the neighborhood, you have 500K homes going up. I think this entire story got out of hand, and the neighbors there complaining are the ones who have something to hide. Lincoln County has a nickname of "candy land" for a reason.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Summer Begins

June 20, 2008

Friday, June 20th. Summer begins today at 7:59 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time. It’s the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere — with daylight ranging from 12 hours and eight minutes at the equator up to a full 24 hours at the Arctic Circle. For many, summer is a season of fun, which is over much too soon. On the other hand, it also ushers in the year’s hottest temperatures. The highest thermometer reading ever recorded in the U.S. was a blistering 134 degrees at Greenland Ranch, California, in 1913. Next highest was notched in 1994, when it was 128 degrees in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Among larger cities, Phoenix, Arizona, holds the record at 122 degrees. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.

Magna Carta Sealed

Following a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John puts his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or "Great Charter." The document, essentially a peace treaty between John and his barons, guaranteed that the king would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church, and maintain the nation's laws. Although more a reactionary than a progressive document in its day, the Magna Carta was seen as a cornerstone in the development of democratic England by later generations.
