Train Robberies

Friday, July 18th. The first of what would be a spate of train robberies in the U.S. occurred this month in 1873, pulled off by a gang headed by Jesse James and his brother, Frank.

Their target was a train of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad as it passed a spot near Adair, Iowa. The gang found only $2,000 in the express car’s safe, so they methodically robbed the frightened passengers of another $1,000.

Jesse James was killed in 1882, and the last train robbery in the nation occurred around 1900. But today, there are still some 417,000 robberies in the U.S., the largest number occur on the nation’s streets and highways.

You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at

HISTORIC ROCK SPRINGS TO HOLD ANNUAL CAMP MEETING

Historian Recalls Early Days

By Jon Mayhew
Publisher

July 17, 2008

DENVER -- The 179th Rock Springs Camp Meeting in Denver, the longest continuous running Camp Meeting in the country, begins the week of July 27th and ends August 10th with "Big Sunday."

The annual event – with roots dating back to the late 1790s – is a two-week affair offering singing, fellowship and spirituality.
According to Rock Springs historian and former Lincoln County Commissioner Terry Brotherton, the camp meeting is expected to draw more than 1,500 people each night of the two-week event.

Brotherton said the camp meeting has evolved over its rich history.

“In the 1800s, camp meeting was more of an event where people would get saved,” said Brotherton. “Today, many will come from hundreds of miles away to relax and see old friends.”

Brotherton, who’s penned two books on the history of the camp ground, said the camp ground itself may owe its existence to an Indian who simply wanted two blankets.

If you have diabetes, here’s an important message from The Carolina Scoop.

Diabetes is a serious
problem...but research shows that controlling diabetes makes a huge difference. Keep your blood sugar close to normal and you can reduce your chances of serious health problems such as blindness, kidney failure, and amputations.

Start by knowing your blood sugar numbers. Test your blood sugar on a regular basis and keep it in the normal range. Choose healthy foods and watch how much you eat. Make time for regular physical activity and take your medicine as prescribed.

Stick with your diabetes treatment plan and you’ll feel better, have more energy, and stay healthy.

Best of all…with your diabetes under control, you’ll be around for family…for friends…for life.

Control your diabetes. For life.

Preventing Rabies From Affecting “YOU”

In 2007, 4,120 animals were submitted for rabies testing in North Carolina and 474 of them were found positive. Among these animals were raccoons, skunks, foxes, bats and cats, with raccoons being the most often tested with 245. One of the methods for preventing rabies exposure is to increase the number of people who have been vaccinated for rabies before working directly with animals, such as veterinarians and wildlife personnel. Unfortunately, a shortage of vaccine is preventing these people from getting the vaccine so that people who are actually exposed to rabies will have vaccine available. This vaccine shortage and the large number of animals in our natural environment with rabies, reminds us of the importance of taking necessary precautions to protect ourselves against rabies.

For What It's Worth
07/14/08

Many of you spent your Fourth of July grilling out, swimming, watching fireworks and enjoying time with friends and family.

My Fourth this year, however, was spent in the confines of Carolinas Medical Center - Charlotte, and my odyssey started about a month ago. That's when the pain in my....back.....appeared......

Like everything else, I largely ignored the pain, attributing it to Elizabeth's "motivation" to juggle our news endeavor with my new job at WSOC-TV. However, the pain grew stronger and became constant.

Unable to ignore it any longer, I finally drove myself from Charlotte to Lincolnton, straight to the folks at CMC-Lincoln. Peter Acker and the entire staff there did a tremendous job getting me stabalized and in a Lincoln EMS ambulance to go back to Charlotte.
