DENVER -- Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy Bruce White is as tough as they come. And while the newest Lake Norman patrol officer stands more than 6 feet tall, he's as humble and good-hearted as any man can be, just like his boss -- Sheriff Tim Daugherty.

White readily admits that he made a mistake -- despite friends trying to intervene -- and has spent considerable time coming to grips with his actions and how to turn the negatives into positives. Last summer, White was one of many law enforcement officers who attended a North Carolina State Troopers Golf Tournament in Lincolnton.

LINCOLNTON --
People looking for a bargain on school supplies are getting an extra break during the upcoming North Carolina sales tax holiday. It's the seventh year in a row for the holiday, where sales taxes are waived for a two-day period. For 2008, the sales tax holiday starts Friday Aug. 1 and runs through Sunday Aug. 3.

Last year, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley signed a law that added school instructional materials, such as reference books, maps, globes, textbooks and workbooks with an individual price tag of up to $300, to the list of items included as exempt from the sales tax. Previously, the price limit was $100.

Statement by Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, on Legislation to Address Medicare Solvency

The law created a “trigger” that requires action if the Medicare trustees have issued two consecutive reports projecting Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Servicesthe program’s spending from general revenue would exceed 45 percent.  This year, in response to the second consecutive Medicare Trustee report, the President proposed legislation to lengthen the life of the trust fund and improve Medicare and that legislation was introduced by members in both houses.  Under the law, Congress is required to act on the President’s proposal or an alternative by July 30.

The Congressional Budget Office may have determined that budget gimmicks contained in Medicare legislation passed last week meet the technical requirements of the trigger law. But parliamentary sleight of hand will do nothing to resolve the enormous financial challenges presented by Medicare in the near future.

Congress has failed to act to address the underlying fiscal crisis, and the Democrat House leadership is now actively seeking to silence the alarm bells and prevent any action to address Medicare’s underlying solvency problems.

The Department of Justice Commemorates the 18th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

July 25, 2008

"Since 1990, the Department has worked vigorously under the Americans with Disabilities Act to protect and create opportunities for persons with disabilities," said Grace Chung Becker, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. "Through a comprehensive program of law enforcement and technical assistance, the Department remains dedicated in its multifaceted and innovative approach to removing barriers to ensure that persons with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of American life."

The following recent ADA Enforcement efforts illustrate the Civil Rights Division’s commitment to the vigorous enforcement of the ADA:

  • On July 25, 2008, the Department announced an agreement with the Education Management Corporation (EDMC) to eliminate architectural barriers at 19 Brown Mackie campuses operated by EDMC in Ohio, Kentucky, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Arizona, and Oklahoma. This is the Department’s first ADA agreement with a private post-secondary for-profit school, and with an education provider that leases all of its campus facilities from another entity.
  • On July 21, 2008, the Department announced a consent decree resolving a lawsuit concerning retaliation by the Colorado Springs Police Department, in Colorado Springs, Colo., against one of its officers. The officer, Lance Lazoff, was denied a promotion in retaliation for support of his wife’s ADA action against the police department. Pursuant to the consent decree, Officer Lazoff will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant
    .
  • On July 10, 2008, the Department announced a settlement agreement with Raynor Country Day School, in Long Island, N.Y., to ensure that children with diabetes are not turned down for enrollment in the school’s day camp. Under the agreement, Raynor School will make reasonable accommodations to permit children with diabetes to attend.

The word “pregnancy” always suggests growth but how much growth is healthy?

Researchers say infants had more health risks if their mothers gained too much weight – or gained too little – during pregnancy.

The researchers say mothers who gain too much weight risk complications during birth. Others who don’t gain enough weight risk having babies that didn’t grow as well.

Each mother is a special case; so a one-size-fits-all weight system might not work. How much weight, then, should mothers gain?

Study director Dr. Meera Viswanathan of RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina:

“The bottom line is all women should ask their physicians for their recommended weight gain range and use their prenatal visits to monitor progress.”

The study was supported by HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
