FALL VEGETABLE GARDENS

Many vegetables are well adapted to planting in the summer for fall harvest. Planting a fall garden will extend the gardening season so you can continue to harvest fresh produce after earlier crops have finished.

Many cool-season vegetables, such as broccoli, produce their best flavor and quality when they mature during cool weather. In North Carolina, the spring temperatures often heat up quickly. Vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, tend to bolt or develop bitter flavor when they mature during hot summer weather.

FBI Warns of Storm Worm Virus

The FBI and its partner, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), have received reports of recent spam e-mails spreading the Storm Worm malicious software, known as malware. These e-mails, which contain the phrase “F.B.I. vs. facebook,” direct e-mail recipients to click on a link to view an article about the FBI and Facebook, a popular social networking website. The Storm Worm virus has also been spread in the past in e-mails advertising a holiday e-card link. Clicking on the link downloads malware onto the Internet connected device, causing it to become infected with the virus and part of the Storm Worm botnet.

CHILDREN'S EYE SAFETY

Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States, and most injuries occurring in
school-aged children are sports-related. These injuries account for an estimated 100,000 physician visits per year at a cost of more than $175 million.

All children who play sports should use protective eyewear.

Protective eyewear is made of ultra-strong polycarbonate, which is 10 times more impact resistant than other plastics. This material does not reduce vision.

Student athletes who have vision in only one eye or a history of eye injury or eye surgery should especially use protective eyewear.
